With the New Year rolling in, I thought it would be helpful to take a step by step look at how to set and achieve goals for 2011 or anytime.
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Proverbs 16:9
- I first and foremost want to recognize that while planning is a good thing, we must always keep in the forefront of our minds that while we “plan our way” it is ultimately the Lord who “establishes our steps.” It us ultimately the Lord’s plans and not ours that will come to fruition. Therefore we must first seek Him and His will for our lives in prayer and in His word, before we set out to make any type of plans. We must desire above all to submit our desires and will to His desires and will. Otherwise, all that we plan to do will be meaningless. You will most likely experience frustration as your plans, which might not have been God’s plan for you, don’t come about the way you hoped. Keeping a God-centered focus when it comes to planning and goal-setting is the number one, most important step! When this is in place, and a wrench seems to be thrown into “your plans,” you will not be devastated. You can rest in the fact that our loving Sovereign God is in control of it all, and remember that His plans are always better than ours.
The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty. Proverbs 21:5
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15
- Now that we have established where our focus needs to be when it comes to planning and goal-setting, we can recognize that planning is a good thing. God does desire for us to be wise in how we use the time here on earth that He has given us. God has created us as people who are able to, and need to plan out our days and our time here on earth, so that we are able to use it for His glory – not waste it away. Careful planning and goal setting can help us to, by God’s grace, live lives more pleasing to Him.
With these things firmly set in place in our hearts, we are now ready to explore the how-to’s of goal setting.
