Our Curriculum for 2012-2013 {*Not* Back-to-School Blog Hop}

nbts-blog-hop-calendar-2012

I am going to be posting this month with the “2012 Not Back-to-School Blog Hop” going on over at iHomeschool Network.  For the first week of the hop, the topic is curriculum.

For the past 4 out of 5 homeschool years, we have been using Heart of Dakota for our homeschool curriculum.   I adore this curriculum for our family!  I love it’s Christ-centeredness, ease of use, planned out lessons, richness in literature, and so much more!  So, this year, what else would we choose but Heart of Dakota?!  It is exciting to be in our now 5th year using this curriculum.  I now know the flow of it so well, and am in such a great groove with it that it just seems to get easier and easier to use.  In addition to that, now that Zoe is going through all of the guides that Trevor has already been through, it is so much easier to navigate our way through the school year.

I have chosen to make some changes, however, for us.  About halfway through our school year last year, I found that I was not keeping on top of Trevor’s 4th grade grammar and writing curricula (the ones recommended in HOD) as I should have been.  They were great programs, but we were falling behind on it.  I decided that the best thing for us was going to be to replace all Language Arts with Switched on Schoolhouse’s Language Arts program.  I knew that way Trevor would be getting and doing everything he needed.  He ended up cpmpletely LOVING the program!  So, we are sticking with it for this year as well.

Our other big change we implemented last year was to cut out HOD’s science, and instead combine science for both kids using Apologia Science curriculum!  I am really glad we made this change.  I am totally LOVING Apologia science and the way it is laid out and presented to the kids.  I am also loving that I can teach it to them together, and they are both learning the same thing at the same time!

Now, onto the details of our curriculum for each student this year!!

{2012-2013 curriculum from HOD: We read – A LOT!!}

Apologia Live Retreat ~ Take 2

IMG_5666pk

I hope you enjoyed reading some of the great things we heard at the Apologia Live Retreat Austin in my post about it last week!  If you missed it, be sure to check it out here.  As I said last week – the retreat was awesome!  And I want to share some of my notes & tweets from the event.  May it encourage your heart this week, dear homeschool mom!  And let me tell you – there are also awesome pieces of wisdom in here for parents in general – not just homeschool parents!!

This week I will share some of the awesome tidbits of wisdom we got to hear from Debra Bell, Elizabeth Smith, and Rachael Carman.

First up – wisdom from Debra Bell

  • God wants to reveal Himself to you in ways you would have never known Him-had you not homeschooled
  • One of the advantages to homeschooling: our children are being brought up in the truth, and truth is in short order these days!
  • We have the opportunity in homeschooling to preserve the truth
  • Creation is Gods masterpiece, evidence of the Master Artist at work in the world.
  • It’s important that as Christians we bear witness to our Creator- ultimately pointing others to our redeemer.
  • God allowed development of children, so there would be an opportunity to teach the next generation. {Kids are not born fully grown and knowledgeable – we get to teach them, help them develop, grow, and learn about their great Creator & Redeemer}
  • The knowledge of God is to be our primary pursuit as Christians-equally important-pursuing the love of God
  • Pursue knowledge of God, and He will give us undertanding
  • As Christians, we are the guardians of the truth! This should motivate and humble us.
  • If truth is relegated to government, anything the law allows becomes the new truth.
  • God has cloaked Himself in mystery-and in His kindness has drawn us into this mystery.
  • God, as a common grace to all of us, gives us curiosity.
  • People think homeschool kids are going to turn out timid & introverted- the truth is our kids are bold- going out into all parts of the the world boldy with the truth and pursuing their callings.
  • Homeschooling isn’t a burden – because it is what GOD is doing through you!! {AMEN!}

Next up, Elizabeth Smith:

  • How do you rate in seeking/granting forgiveness among family members?
  • How do you rate in the area of humility?(admitting when you’re wrong?)
  • Where do you rate in using words of encouragement?
  • Do we make a regular practice of encouraging our children?
  • Do you find ways to let your child know you love them?
  • Much of our children’s behavior is a reaction to our parenting. We need to search our hearts.
  • If our children act negatively toward us, there are positive things we can do.
  • The best parent/child relationships are the ones where the parents are humble.
  • Legalism and self-righteousness builds a wall.
  • God has created and wired our children to love us and want to forgive us.
  • If we don’t deal with justice with our children-it can lead to bitterness as they get older-they hang on to the anger.
  • Seeking forgiveness:do it in person, work out your wording ahead of time, take full responsibility.
  • Encouragement results in emotionally healthy children - A lack of encouragement can cause a child to lose heart and become unmotivated or depressed.
  •  An emotionally healthy child is open to experiencing Gods grace. Let your words be honey to their hearts.
  • We need God’s wisdom to resolve conflicts (PRAY for wisdom!)
  • The relationship between a husband and wife models respect to our children…what are we modeling?
  • We attack the problem – not the person.
  • We should break our childrens pride without breaking their spirit. This takes wisdom.
  • Reward and bribe are not the same thing. No where in scripture does God model bribing children.
  • Unexpected rewards given after good behavior is Biblical.
  • Broken promises will build a wall between you and your child.
  • A thoughtless phrase may long be forgotten by us while they create a deep wound in the heart of our child.

I’m telling you, is this GOOD stuff, or what?!!!  Alright, last, but certainly not least….here’s Rachael Carman:

  • Love sees beyond today, love serves joyfully, love sacrifices willfully.
  • Your kids need to know you are a mom who worships God – they need to see you in awe and adoration of the Savior .
  • Worship sets the tone in your home
  • Do your kids ever see you on your knees?
  • You wanna bless your kids? Love your husband!
  • I double-dog-dare-you- Ask your husband, “what can I do to serve you today?” – watch how that might change your marriage.
  • We need to love our kids enough to teach them to obey – God disciplines those He loves.
  • Siblings- your childrens’ testimony to the world is that they actually love each other.
  • Just because your kids are siblings doesnt mean they have to hate each other.
  • The people that you need to be hospitable to dont need to see your house clean. Invite them. Be hospitable.
  • The enemy’s keeping the doors of our houses closed to each other by telling us the house has to be perfect before opening them.
  • do your kids know your sneer or your smile more?
  • Are you that ANGRY homeschool mom? Or is someone wishing you were their mom? How bout your kids?
  • Your smile can convict more than your mean mom look. Its the power of the love of Christ & the Holy Spirit.
  • Why should you laugh? God has a sense of humor. Exhibit A: the platypus.
  • When I know where the scissors are, I wont have the pitter-patter of little feet, and will long for the day when I couldn’t find scissors!
  • We need to be showing our kids the awe and wonder of God’s world
  • Dont just let your kids be WOWED by Gods creation… Let yourself be WOWED!
  • Embrace your role as a homeschool mom! Pass that passion onto your kids to embrace theirs.
  • Set the bar high in academics – Moms, we have some job fields we need to take back!
Bonus: A few extra nuggets of wisdom from the panel discussion:
  • Dont be afraid to have your kids tested. It can be a useful tool when used properly.
  • If you have the opportunity when your kids are young to go and observe a veteran homeschool family-do it
  • Include your children in everything. make them feel like its their ministry, not just yours.
  • Set appointments for yourself to write. It will help your kids know when they have all of you.
  • Make sure your children know why youve chosen to homeschool.
  • Dont let your kids compare themselves. Each is unique. Labels are for medicine.

Hope you enjoyed these wonderful pieces of sweet wisdom from the Apologia Live Retreat in Austin!!  Friends – if you did not make it this year, we must plan to go next year!  You will love it!  And if you are in the Baltimore or Atlanta area – you have retreats coming up this spring!!  Don’t miss out on this awesome time of encouragement homeschool mom – we all need it – no matter how busy we are!!  Stop and take a moment to refresh yourself and get re-filled, so you will be able to pour Christ into your kids!

Apologia Live Retreat – Take 1

As you most likely know, I had the opportunity and privelage of attending the Apologia Live Retreat in Austin on Friday Oct 21st, and Saturday Oct 22nd.  And as you’ve already heard me say – I had a wonderful time!  :)

I was SO extremely blessed by the amazing speakers and their sweet, sweet hearts for the Lord and for the homeschooling mom!

I took extensive notes – via twitter!  Lol!  It was super fun live tweeting from the retreat.  I tweeted the wonderful nuggets of truth and encouragement that really struck my heart.  It was also great to have other wonderful bloggers in the room doing the same (Amber, Christy, & Heather)- so I could retweet the parts I missed tweeting myself!

So, what I’ve decided to do, is compile those precious nuggets of wisdom and encouragement here for you!  Trying to weed through them on twitter can get a little daunting, so I hope this will give you a picture of what all we learned and walked away with during our weekend in Austin.  There is great wisdom to be found for the homeschool parent – as well as parents in general!

We had amazing, godly ladies who spoke at our Austin retreat – Heidi St.John, Zan Tyler, Debra Bell, Elizabeth Smith, Rachael Carman, followed by a discussion panel of all the speakers at the end.

{L to R: Rachael Carman, Anne MacCallum-worship leader, Debra Bell, Zan Tyler, Heidi St.John, Elizabeth Smith – photo taken during panel discussion time}

In today’s post, I will share some of my favorite highlights from what Heidi and Zan shared with us…

First up: Heidi St. John

  • The goal of education is discipleship – discipleship starts at home.
  • The Lord is going to equip you for everything you will encounter along the way!
  • Listen to your children but remember that the responsibility for bringing them up has been given to you by God.
  • Homeschooling is a miracle – because in and of ourselves – we could never do it! {God is the one working in and through us!}
  • There is no formula for parenting, there is only Faith.
  • Child training trumps the abc’s every time!
  • If your curriculum isn’t working – shelve it! You wouldn’t make your kids wear shoes that hurt.
  • Listen to the Lord – you can not hear from the Lord if you do not spend time in the word.
  • Show your children what it means to listen to the Lord – spend time in the word with them.
  • Listen to the Lord – listen to your husband – listen to your children – listen to godly counsel
  • Spirit-filled homeschooling is not bound by legalism {Dont need to follow what a homeschooler is “supposed” to look like – follow the Lord}
  • Your children have been given to you by the Lord as a weapon in a spiritual battle (Psm 127:4) Launch your arrows for the Lord!
  • Once you let the arrow go, its not coming back. Children are not boomerangs.
  • Invest in what matters most – invest in your child’s heart! That is the goal of Christian parenting!
  • Follow the Leader-Jesus (in your parenting/homeschooling)…what was He like? Gentle and humble in heart.
  • Lord what does it means to take your yoke on me?  Being yoked with Christ means finding rest.
  • Instead of running to the next program for help – run to the Lord – He will provide your every need.
  • We have to partner with the Lord, on our knees, praying over each child.
  • Jesus gave me three imperatives: come to me, take my yoke, learn from me.
  • Academics are a secondary focus – our primary focus should be descipleship.
  • The homeschool years are going to fly by, a blip on the radar, enjoy the journey.

Zan Tyler:

  • who is my child? what is his passion? what interests him? Start with relationship – not curriculum
  • The greatest gift you can give your children is intimacy/relationship in the home
  • the stronger the relationships are with your children, the greater their education in the home
  • Cultivating intimacy.Quality time grows out of quantity of time you spend w your kids, in daily life.
  • time is a great gift the Lord has given us – time is a precursor to intimacy.
  • Cultivate intimacy with personal presence with your kids.
  • Jesus WALKED w/his disciples, ministering to them, talking to them, spending TIME w them, Investing HIMSELF. {He is our model as parents}
  • Be the unhurried teacher who is about spending time with her kids.
  • God ordained the family – and what He ordained He will bless!
  • If we are going to disciple our children, it is not going to be accidentally – it’s going to be intentionally.
  • Grace is transmitted through Godly parenting.
  • As you’re determined to bless your children – God is much more determined to bless you(us).
  • Interaction with adults is one of the most important tools in a childs development-Who’s interacting with your child?
  •  The home environment is giving them a place to spend time growing up & a place to flourish.
  • One of the worst things we can to do our kids is stay in that negative nit-picky mode
  • When we are negative in homeschooling we are sewing failure into them. We need to speak LIFE into them.
  • Its easy to cross line between encouraging kids & being nit-picky & negative, since they are a reflection of us.
  • The goal is to prepare them (our children) for their God-given calling.
  • Each race is different – but each race has the same destination.
What did I tell you?  Such a blessing and a refreshment to the heart!  Hope you enjoyed those great tidbits from Heidi and Zan as much as I did.  Of course it is such a different experience being there – as opposed to reading it here.  If you ever get the chance to go to an Apologia Live event in the future – take it!!  I promise you wont be disappointed!
To Be Continued…..

Of Apologia and Internet

Here I am, blogging from my iPhone again (or rather-still)! Yep, still no internet in the house! Have I mentioned AT&T DSL totally stinks? Actually that would be the people working for AT&T who don’t have their act together! Seriously! They said ‘you might be without internet for an hour at most.‘ some how that hour has turned into 8 days – and still – NADA! Moral of the story – if you have the option to have Internet other than AT&T -by all means- take it!! Rather unfortunately, I do not have that option.

In other news: I had a fabulous time at the Apologia Live Retreat!

I can’t wait to share more, but that will require Internet and a real computer! If you had a chance to check out my twitter feed this weekend, you got a glimpse at the wonderful encouragement we had the privilege of receiving. I can’t wait to share more and give you a better summary of all that went on!

Until then, have a great week friends!

Calling All Homeschool Mamas!!

Have you heard the buzz yet about Apologia Live Retreats?!  Oh.my.word!  I am super excited and need to share this awesome event with you!!

I had the opportunity to head to Austin to attend a luncheon in July with some of the amazing ladies of Apologia!  Going to the luncheon, I wasn’t quite sure what all I would hear or experience, but I gladly went, ready to hear more about the Apologia Live Retreat.  The ladies of Apologia who met with us to share the vision of the Live Retreats were: Liz Corson, Michelle Eichorn, Rachael Carman, Zan Tyler, & Kristin Weber.  These ladies were just too sweet, and some of the most genuine ladies you’ll meet!

What IS an Apologia Live Retreat?
This retreat is a wonderful opportunity for the homeschool mom, no matter where she is in her journey, to have some time to get away and be fed spiritually.  As homeschool moms we pour so much of ourselves into our families, that sometimes we neglect to take the time needed to recharge and refresh ourselves in the Lord.  And then what happens?  Burnout, frustration, and dare I say….giving up!!   The goal of these retreats is to give that Christ-centered encouragement and refreshment we so desperately need!!

So what can you expect from the Apologia Live Retreat?
From the Apologia Live website:

“In the General Sessions we will worship, learn, listen, and pray. We will be encouraged spiritually.  The speakers will share their struggles and successes from their own homeschool experiences…Outside of the general sessions we will encourage one another in prayer and fellowship.”

I was impressed and so excited to see their loving, genuine hearts for the homeschool mom.  They truly have a passion to encourage and uplift the homeschool mom in her walk with the Lord as she lives out the journey of homeschooling.

There will also be a “Nuts and Bolts” session this year which will cover some of the more practical aspects of homeschooling – some fun “how to” sessions!

If you are a homeschooling mama – you seriously need to consider attending one of these events!  I am convinced you will be refreshed, blessed, and encouraged on your homeschooling journey!
Event Dates:
Chicago, October 7-8, 2011

Austin, October 21-22, 2011

Homeschool Bookfair 2010

Oh, the homeschool bookfair…  One of the highlights of my homeschooling year!  I attended this past weekend, and had a wonderful time of refreshment, encouragement as a homeschooling mom, and stocked up on curricula and tools for the upcoming school year!

I attended 2 workshops on Friday, both by speaker Zan Tyler from Apologia Press.  I also attended 2 workshops on Saturday, one by Tod Wilson from Family Man Ministries, and one by Zan Tyler.   And my sweet husband even attended one of the Tod Wilson workshops on Saturday (Help!  I’m Marriend to a Homeschooling Mom), and he really enjoyed it.

I came away from Zan’s workshops with a great reminder to really get to know your child personally, and teach & direct them in the direction of their God-given strengths & gifts.  I would recommend her book 7 Tools for Cultivating Your Child’s Potential, if you would like to expound on this topic.

From Todd’s workshops, I was reminded and encouraged that God is working in them and creating them to be who He has already planned them to be.  We as homeschooling moms, are not going to mess our kids up – even though we often feel we just aren’t doing enough!  He gave a great example of the man who discovered DNA.  He had heard this man being interviewed on the radio, and the interviewer brought up the fact that this man (the discoverer of DNA) had been homeschooled.  He proceeded to ask what his homeschool consisted of, to which the man responded, ‘my parents were hippies, and loved the theater. We lived in the country, did plays and read a lot of books.’ (my loose quotation).  Wow.  Most of us would feel that if we were going to have a child who would be the discoverer of DNA (and we knew this in advance), we would have to make sure we taught him high tech biology & chemistry classes, or they would not reach that ‘destiny’ of being the discoverer of DNA.    We would feel so inadequate to teach this genius child.  But his homeschool consisted of plays and books!!   What a refreshing thing to remember that God has already determined and planned out what our children will be & do when they are older.  We aren’t going to mess them up.  We need to just remain focused on what God has called us to do as wives, mothers, keepers of our homes, teachers, etc….and stop beating ourselves up about everything we think we are doing wrong!!  God will accomplish all of His purposes & plans.  We just simply need to rest in His strength, and do the work He has called us to do!
